Battery Digital Product Passport — what your team needs to know.

EU Regulation 2023/1542 makes Digital Product Passports mandatory for every EV, light transport, and industrial battery over 2 kWh sold in the EU from February 2027. The carbon footprint label is already live (Feb 2026). Here are the required fields, the deadline schedule, and how to ship a compliant passport without a six-figure compliance program.

What you need to collect

Required data fields for a battery passport.

Drawn from Regulation 2023/1542 Annex VIII and Article 77. productpasses.com pre-fills this structure when you pick the battery category template.

Battery identity

  • Unique product identifier (GS1 Digital Link compatible)
  • Manufacturer name, address, EU economic operator ID
  • Battery model, type, batch number
  • Date of manufacture

Chemistry and performance

  • Cell chemistry (Li-ion NMC, LFP, NaS, etc.)
  • Nominal capacity (Ah and kWh)
  • Voltage range, internal resistance
  • Expected service life and cycle count

Materials and sustainability

  • Materials composition by mass percentage
  • Critical raw materials breakdown (lithium, cobalt, nickel, natural graphite)
  • Recycled content percentages (mandatory thresholds from 2031)
  • Carbon footprint per kWh (already mandatory Feb 2026)

Care, repair, end-of-life

  • State-of-health monitoring data fields
  • Replaceable parts list and disassembly instructions
  • Take-back and recycling channels
  • Hazard classification and safety information
Why start now

Suppliers take 6–12 months to deliver clean data.

Battery DPPs need data your suppliers don't already give you — cell-level chemistry, critical raw material origin, recycled content percentages with audit trails. Brands who start the supplier data-collection now will be ready in February 2027. Brands who wait will spend 2026's last quarter chasing certificates.

FAQ

Battery DPP questions, answered.

Which batteries need a Digital Product Passport?

All electric vehicle (EV) batteries, light means of transport (LMT) batteries, and industrial batteries with a capacity over 2 kWh placed on the EU market from February 18, 2027 onwards. Portable batteries (under 2 kWh) are not yet in scope but face other labelling requirements.

What information must a battery passport contain?

Battery model identifier, manufacturer details, battery chemistry, capacity, voltage, weight, expected service life, materials breakdown (with critical raw materials highlighted), recycled content percentages, carbon footprint, state-of-health performance metrics, and end-of-life and dismantling instructions.

When does the battery DPP requirement start?

February 18, 2027 is the hard deadline under EU Regulation 2023/1542. Carbon footprint labelling requirements already entered into force on February 18, 2026. The due diligence obligations were postponed to August 2027 by the 2025 Omnibus IV proposal.

Does this apply to battery importers, not just manufacturers?

Yes. The regulation applies to every economic operator placing batteries on the EU market — manufacturer, importer, or distributor. If you import EV or industrial batteries into the EU for sale, the DPP obligation falls on you.
